Writing skill is the one of the important medium of communication that helps us put across, our ideas, thoughts, and discoveries to the people around the world.
Today with the technological development communication has become easier and faster, we are able to send and receive all that we wanted to be put across people through various means of communication, as a result, the writing skill has very much reduced and today’s children find hard to write.
Whatever the development that we have achieved down the centuries to need to communicate to future generation and need to preserve our great passion of literature, scientific discoveries, medicines etc for one needs to know the art of writing skill.
This will elicit in them creative writing skill. Though we have the computer and all the technologies but still the basic method of writing skill is very necessary that will help the child to communicate better. This needs to be paid attention at the younger age itself.
In schools, we have so many methods to teaching and learning, the recent past smart learning, digital boards, smart class and various other methods have brought down the writing skills among the children.
The schools today must use all the latest technology that are viable for learning at the same time it would be nice if it could also concentrate on writings skills of the students right from kg level according to the writing caliber of the children, for which Pre- writing skills are the first stage of the writings process.
Hand skills refer to the strength and dexterity in our hands. Both depend on how we use the small muscles of our hands. However, we also need the muscle in our forearm to provide strength and stability.
In fact, we often must coordinate and use both type of muscles to do things such as holding and using the pencil. The thumb, index and middle fingers carry out the skilled movements while the ring fingers provide stability and increase strength and control in the upper body and shoulders, this can keep us steady.
It gives us the freedom to use our hands to be more creative and control objects in a very precise manner. Good sensory information is very important for hand skills, as it drives bring what we feel, how we move and where our hands are as we do our work.
The brain must coordinate these sensations with what we see. So, we can make small changes for precise coordination and muscle control. Between the age of 4 to 6 or even from the age of 3, children are in a position to start to learn pre- writing skills thus building up their knowledge and strength of holding a pencil, understanding how to use paper etc.
This removes the common problem of children attending school and finding them needing to write before they are readily equipped to use writing materials and exercise pre- writing skills.
Hand skills and wider sensory skills are needed to develop pre-writing skills; they relate to how people use the muscles in their hands.
These children in the lower classes as tiny babies they learn to grip and pick things up. They learn how to use their muscle to take things, hold things and move things.
This is a crucial pre-writing skill, control of these muscles is also important and as children get older, they find that they can control how long they grip a button, how they move their train around the train set.
Few suggestions for how to help your children to develop pre- writing skills
1. Encourage children to use fingers in play.
2. This could be through finger painting.
3. Putting pennies into a piggy bank.
4. Playing with finger puppets.
5. Lacing beads onto the string.
6. Colouring.
7. Dabbing.
8. Muscles coordination
9. Wrist movements
10. Finger and thumb grip.
11. Eye-hand coordination
12. All these should go through regular practices.
Today the young children love to learn with fun, the learning should not become boring subjects rather it should create in them loves for learning.

Above all children should have fun when they are developing their pre-writing skills, as this will hopefully encourage and enjoyment of writing and a positive attitude towards learning to write as they begin their first year at school.
