The world is dangerous not because of those who do harm but because of those who look at it without doing anything. Are we ready to make a real difference in the world around us? Well everyone of us has got great role to play in making the world a better place to live in.
James Bender, in his book ‘How to talk’, relates the story of a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair it won a blue ribbon. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbours. ‘How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbours when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year? the reporter asked. ‘Why Sir,’ said the farmer, ‘didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbours grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbours grow good corn.’
Like the farmer we should be willing to do good, irrespective of what happens. We must create the atmosphere for peace and harmony. Those who choose to be at peace must help those around them to be at peace. And those who choose to be happy must help others find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound with the welfare of all. The power to make a difference lies within each one of us. If our faith is strong and constant, our effort to make a difference will be more than we ever thought possible. All we need to do is to act as if our desires were already realities. Making a difference is doing ordinary things differently. For instance, your willingness to help a needy child overcome the obstacles of poverty through a sponsorship, when you have the goodwill to take people as they are, when you try a little more to understand the thoughts and feelings of people around you.
Remember, to the world you may be just one person. Yet, to one person, you may be the world! Therefore, let your presence in the world be one that radiates love, peace and happiness and in turn let the world speak for you!
The school is a temple of learning – there is so much good to learn in life and this is where you begin. What you sow today, you will reap tomorrow. Let’s reap the best of everything. Let us not do anything today which we will be ashamed of tomorrow.
