Today reading habit among people generally and especially in young minds started lacking as the media influence is more on every field. People those days took earnest effort in going to library collecting best of writings of great men and women to read but now it is not so, the reading habit slowing finds its back sheet. This article suggests how love for reading will enthuse the young minds for a better tomorrow.
The passion and love for reading library books is a pleasure and one of the greatest gift that anyone can receive. It makes us learn, grow and feed the curiosities. They also act as a gateway to deepen knowledge within one’s personal and professional life.
Whether we come to love reading at five or at fifty the experience has become significant treasures as a part of many people’s lives. My love for reading books started off from my College days.
Reading library books during the college days were the most cherishing moments in my life. It brings in a sense of nostalgic feelings when I think of it.
I really love to drift away into the fantasy world of books. The best and foremost thing about reading is that the mind gets relaxed.
You can sit down in a quiet place and enjoy with a good book which cannot be attained in any of the classrooms. My interest and aptitude were preferably towards reading non –fiction books rather than fiction oriented books.
Apart from which I also read novels, magazines, periodical, and newspapers. We would now ponder on certain aspects as to what makes reading a great way, the books are the best appetizer for a brain.
As the saying goes “People can lose their lives in libraries. They ought to be warned”- Saul Bellow”

Reading books will make our mind honing. One of the main reasons is that it gives us unrestrained access to the author’s mind. Books are a great way of sharing not only knowledge but a thought process.
We rarely realize this, but after reading the book you will start thinking like the author. Furthermore, reading books is an excellent complement to the first-hand experience. We usually see the process of learning as a linear one.
First, you go to school, college and study and then you apply that knowledge for the rest of your life. In reality, true learning comes from interweaving both practices continuously.
Although there are other ways of closing this loop (like going back to school/college), books are quite simple (and cheap) way of doing it. The benefits from this positive feedback loop come from two mechanisms that are triggered while studying i.e. the discovery of new ideas and the reflection of past experience.
The process of discovering new ideas can be quite inspirational. This is especially true at those moments when you encounter a completely new perspective and everything just clicks in a way it never had before.
Books are a very effective way of making this happens. Not only will they help you discover things that are important but you have ignored. Thus, they become a great way of pushing you out of your way. They will inspire and challenge you to try new things.
While reading you also get the chance to reflect on what you’ve done right or wrong in the past. This can be quite enlightening since you will be tying your own experience to the lessons taught, which will result in much more persistent learning.
And that learning will immediately trigger the next time you encounter similar problems in the future, where you will have a more refined solution than the one you used to employ.
In general, if you learn a skill only by experience, you’ll soon reach a plateau where you are comfortable at your current level, and then you will stop improving. That plateau may be pretty high, but it’s as high as you will ever get.
Reading is the only way to complement that process, showing you the mountains around that plateau, showing you where you can improve.
Role of a Teacher In Developing Reading Habits
The Book, once considered to be the best friend has now acquired a status of a much-dreaded foe. There was a time when children used to love reading books, storybooks, comics, and novels.
With the advent of satellite channels, a child is exposed to digital trash. In search of quality entertainment, they stick like glue to TV Sets watching silly comedy and cartoons. Whereas, Reading develops innovative thinking in children unlike TV wherein children see what it offers.
Books provide greater freedom. A child can decide what he or she would like to read. Unfortunately, reading habit is dying very fast.
If a Library is equipped with books, it is the responsibility of a teacher to see that the children make use of the library to the fullest and make a long lasting friendship with the books. This can be accomplished by a teacher who is devoted to books.
She has to be a book lover and an ardent reader. It is difficult for an overburdened child to take an interest unless the child is motivated for reading by the teacher. A teacher can cultivate reading habits and build a child’s character. By narrating interesting stories, a teacher can inspire the kids.
A teacher must play the required role to instill moral values by mastering the ancient art of storytelling and also provide a good selection of reading material to the children.
Students Reading Library Books
The habit of reading can be cultivated, when students get practice in reading and reading habit, in the beginning, is made firm when students get that material to read which interests them and occupies their attention.
Interests differ, aptitudes vary, and individual capacities present a wide variation in student’s reading capacities. In the library each has what he wants, each goes at the speed to which his capabilities allow him to go.
Let us see some of the impacts of reading library books on children
- It supplements class work by increasing student’s vocabulary, quickening their intelligence and extending their general knowledge.
- It enables the students to prepare themselves for taking part in the various co-curricular activities of the school. They get information which is very helpful to them in taking part in debates, giving lectures and writing for the school magazine.
- It develops the habits of the students to derive pleasure and information from recreational and informative books.
- It broadens their outlook by placing a vast sphere of information before them.
- It imparts training to the students for the proper use of books
- It gives students training in punctuality by impressing upon them the necessity of returning and borrowing books at a fixed time.
- It inculcates in the students the habit of silent reading.
- It provides an opportunity to make the best use of leisure time thereby lessening the chance of indiscipline in the school.
The library is thus, a common platform upon which all students meet on a common level with equal opportunities. It is the nucleus of the school environment, the center of the intellectual activities of the school.
The reading habit could be inculcated in the young minds in the school days that will walk along with them for longer life.
The love for reading library books has brought comfort, assurance, confidence, security, relaxation, happiness and fun. It feeds our imagination and helped to empathize.
The library is the pillar stone for reading, plays a crucial role and has created an inspirational learning place for students, teachers and parents who collaborate and connect with each other, with learning and with the world around them, let the love for reading books may increase as the day go by, so that young minds are filled wider knowledge in all the fields.
The schools must find ways and means to encouraged kids right from the start of schooling so that they develop a test for reading as they grow and get connected to wider knowledge of new discoveries around the globe.
